Pharmacy Technician Program with Externship

This 50-hour program will prepare students to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.  Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.  Through classroom lecture and hands-on labs, students will review dosage calculations, drug classifications, the “top 200 drugs”, IV flow rates, sterile compounding, dose conversions, aseptic technique, the handling of sterile products, total parental nutrition (TPN), dispensing of prescriptions, inventory control and billing and reimbursement.  In addition to classroom lecture and labs, this program includes an optional 80-hour clinical externship through a local pharmacy.  To be eligible for the 80-hour clinical externship, students must successfully complete the 50-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening (not included in tuition) and meet other requirements.  The fee for the Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (CPhT) is $129 through the Pharmacy Technician Certified Board (PTCB) or $99 through National Workforce Career Association (NWCA), which is an additional cost. It is not required to participate in the externship to take the CPhT exam. Additional on-the-job hours are required to register with the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy.  Book included in course fee.
