Proficiency Testing

What is a proficiency exam?

A proficiency is an exam administered by Testing Services that will allow you to "test out" of a course. Please see list of exams available here. They can be either oral or written exams.

Who can take a proficiency exam?

  • Any student who has not already attempted the exam.
  • Any student who has not attempted the course.
  • Any student who has completed all steps through admissions and is eligible for registration.
  • Any student who has not failed the first course in a sequence is able to take the proficiency for the subsequent course (if available).
  • Please refer to the Board Policy 3358:11-2-26 for more specific information. This is available online at www.owens.edu/trustees/policies.

How much does it cost?

There is a $25 examination fee, per proficiency exam. This is nonrefundable.

How do I apply and pay?

For more details about payment and procedure, obtain a copy of the Application For Examination at the Testing Center, in either Toledo or Findlay.

When can I take the exam?

Please allow 5 business days for processing of the application and fee. The Testing Center will call to schedule your examination.

Where do I take the exam?

Your exam will be administered in the Testing Center, in either Toledo or Findlay. You choose the location on the application.

When will I receive my results?

Grading time varies by test. All test information is immediately sent to the respective department for grading. Since other offices grade the exam, the turnaround time varies. We do not know when the results will be returned to our office. Students will receive notification of test results in their Owens Community College email account.

What should I bring on test day?

You must present a valid, photo ID. Some proficiency exams allow you to use a calculator. All other items must be placed into a locker, which we will provide. Please familiarize yourself with the rules of the Testing Center prior to your arrival.
