The opportunities to have a flexible schedule in school can lead to a student’s success. For Rebecca Hawkins, this year’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Outstanding Graduate, flexibility was an ideal reason why Owens Community College was the right place for her to pursue her education.

Hawkins grew up in Grand Rapids and was homeschooled. She was inspired to pursue sonography after experiencing an ultrasound. “I thought it was so interesting and decided it was the career path I wanted to pursue,” she said.

When it came time to pursue higher education, Haskins felt Owens would provide her with high-quality education due to the reputation of the healthcare programs. Once Hawkins was immersed in the program, she saw the large support system she had surrounding her. “The faculty is genuinely committed to the success and development of the class,” she said.

After graduation, Hawkins hopes to pursue her bachelor’s degree while working at a hospital. One day, she said she would like to teach.
