A personal experience can have a life-changing effect in many ways. For Ben Tauber, time he spent in the hospital led him to pursue nursing. Tauber is this year’s recipient of the Peggy Bensman award, the top nursing award and one of the highest honors in the School of Nursing and Health Professions.

Tauber, a 2006 Southview High School graduate, previously worked in fashion but never felt satisfied. He got sick and spent a lot of time in the hospital, changing his life. “I decided to leave fashion behind and enroll in school for nursing,” he said, adding, “I absolutely fell in love with it and continue to every shift.”

As Tauber was looking at where to pursue his nursing degree, Owens was a top pick from the start. “The nursing program at Owens stood above the rest in the area when I started researching,” said Tauber. The placement and NCLEX pass rate, which has surpassed state and national pass rates for more than two decades, impressed Tauber. “I felt it would be the best place to prepare me to enter the world of healthcare.”

During his time at Owens, Tauber served as president of Alpha Delta Nu, an honors society for nursing students.

After graduation, Tauber will work in the emergency department at ProMedica Toledo Hospital. He also plans to continue his education.
