College Credit Plus Student Thrives at Owens

Abby McCrea

Students of all ages attend Owens Community College, from traditional-age right after high school graduation, non-traditional and even current high school students. The high school students, like Abby McCrea, are earning college credit through the College Credit Plus (CCP) program.

McCrea started her high school journey at Notre Dame Academy. When she was a sophomore, McCrea switched to homeschooling, citing her mental health. Her brother also began homeschooling at the same time and also took classes at Owens, which familiarized the family with the CCP program.

The following year, McCrea enrolled in her first CCP class, American Sign Language (ASL) with instructor Anita Coleman. She began to supplement her homeschool courses with Owens classes such as psychology, pre-calculus and composition. As of December, McCrea finished all her high school state requirements. “I’m doing some extra ASL classes this semester just for fun,” she said. She will graduate in May with her high school diploma and an ASL certificate from Owens.

While at Owens, McCrea has found a community of belonging. “Despite being the youngest person in most of my classes, I have been accepted and made lots of friends,” she said.

The Library and Learning Commons has been a frequent stop while on campus due to the proximity to her classes. Jane Berger, director of Library Services, was also McCrea’s elementary school librarian. Their connection strengthened at Owens. “Jane and the other librarians are always there for me when I’m having a stressful day, need a hug or some personal help with homework,” said McCrea. She also visits an ASL tutor in the learning commons and visits tutors in the writing center for additional help. “Everyone there is very kind and accepting and there is no ‘shaming’ for getting help.”

McCrea will pursue a Special Education degree at Bowling Green State University in the fall. She also plans to continue coaching gymnastics at the YMCA.
