The Guiding Scalpel Award for Education Leadership is awarded by the program chair and adjunct faculty based on educational excellence as well as going beyond the classroom to assist other students in their education.

Jacey Lloyd had a passion for medicine her whole life. She originally wanted to be a surgeon but instead chose surgical technology and working with surgeons on a daily basis. The Fort Wayne native moved to the area and looked at where to pursue her education. “I knew Owens had a surgical technology program, which is what I wanted to do, so it worked out perfectly,” Lloyd said.

Lloyd works at Trinity Health in Ann Arbor, Michigan, as a surgical technologist in labor and delivery. She hopes to one day return to Owens as an instructor.

The Beyond the Scalpel Award is awarded by the program chair and adjunct faculty and determined by demonstrating excellence in the operating room in the areas of skill, leadership, professionalism, innovation and education.

Tracey Recker, a Sylvania Northview graduate, was inspired to get into surgical technology because she loved the organization that goes with the career and the impact on the patient. “It’s a good way to be there for the patient and feel like you’re contributing to their health and well-being,” she said.

Recker works as a surgical technologist at ProMedica Toledo Hospital.
