The path we choose for our life may change throughout the years. For Zach Kalafsky, a Barbara Rood Student Choice Award recipient, he is changing his career with hopes of combining his passions into one.

Kalafsky graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School in 2016 before heading to the University of Findlay where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in pre-veterinary studies in 2020. Kalafsky then realized he wanted a career change. “I knew I still wanted to be in medicine so I decided nursing would be a good fit for me,” he said. He hopes to incorporate his animal background and his new nursing background to promote health.

When finding where to pursue his nursing degree, Kalafsky chose the Findlay-area Campus of Owens because of its close proximity to his home. He also said the affordability made Owens the top choice for his studies.

The hands-on environment in the nursing program helped Kalafsky succeed. “It allowed for us to get a good idea of how to connect nursing responsibilities and how to correct possible issues within the clinical field,” he said.

After graduation, Kalafsky will work in the Cardiac Care Unit at Blanchard Valley Hospital.
