Tools for healing and wellness can range from western medicine to holistic medicine and even art. Branna O’Dea, a local artist, has seen how instrumental and powerful creative expression can be for healing. “As someone who has experienced more than one personal trauma, something over 70% of adults experience, I can personally attest to how creative expression is a critical component of resilience,” O’Dea said. O’Dea is this year’s recipient of the Gerald Bazer Award.

The Bazer Award is presented to the Outstanding Arts and Sciences Graduate in the School of Liberal Arts at Owens C. The recipient will achieve a minimum GPA of 3.5 and demonstrated exceptional scholarship and achievement.

When looking for a place to pursue her education, the 1991 Bedford High School graduate was drawn to the welcoming and approachable atmosphere at Owens. “I needed to test out my goals against the limits Lupus can impose amidst the challenges of being a single parent,” O’Dea said, adding, “this meant I needed a high-quality education with less financial impact and online flexibility.” When she enrolled, the online course selection, diverse faculty as well as their encouragement and feedback led to her success.

While at Owens, O’Dea was involved in the Honors Program, Psi Beta, a national honor society in psychology for community and junior colleges, and the Honors club.

After graduating, O’Dea plans to work toward obtaining her degree in clinical psychology and art therapy. She hopes to work as a therapist specializing in PTSD and trauma as well as volunteer as an art therapist in support groups for survivors of domestic and religious abuse.
