Scroll. Scroll. Click. Click. Using Social Media to Spread Your “Brand”
Nov 14 @ 9:30 am – 10:30 am

This session will focus on effectively using social media to market your “brand,” or other’s brand, as well as grow a network with those with similar interests.

About the presenter: Jen Hazel has been a Professor of English at Owens Community College for 15 years, and she hopes to be here for at least another 15! In addition to her role as a Professor, she has led many projects and initiatives such as revamping the advising program; creating a new student orientation experience; developing campus student mentoring; leading a team in the creation of a co-requisite Composition I course with workshops for educators; and most recently, in conjunction with the manager of tutoring, implementing an embedded tutoring pilot Jen designed and finally, with the Library Director, developing The BIG Read, which raises awareness of different perspectives through literature and accompanying activities across campus and in the surrounding communities. Jen is also the Humanities Department Program Director and designed three brand new certificates that began this fall — one of which is the Media Influencer Certificate! Even with all these projects, according to Jen, nothing is more amazing than working with students to help them find their “Ah-ha!” moment.

Taking Control of Your Creative Career
Nov 15 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm

The beauty of a creative career is that we also have the ability to create the exact career we want for ourselves. In this session, Kim will discuss taking control of your creative career—even when you’re unsure of where you want to end up — with topics such as gaining confidence in your work, building a portfolio that reflects where you want to go, getting paid what you’re worth, making intentional career moves, being your own boss, and so on. This conversation is all about helping you feel more aligned and fulfilled in your career journey.

About the presenter: After getting her start at Owens Community College, Kim Merritt transferred to the School of Visual Arts in New York City to finish a BFA in Advertising. In just over a decade, she’s won ten awards while working at agencies throughout New York, London, and Los Angeles, and her work has appeared in everything from Super Bowl campaigns to The Wall Street Journal.

After being laid off from her first job, Kim recognized the opportunity to pivot and try travel writing and landscape photography. She sold her first article she’d ever pitched, which also got her featured in People Magazine and helped her advertising career once she pivoted back. Now Kim is following a new quest, where she recently won $10k to launch her very own creative studio — one that employs passionate freelance creatives to work with purpose-driven brands that are making a positive impact in the world.
