What does a Cardiac Sonographer do?
A cardiac sonographer, also known as an echocardiographer, is a highly-skilled professional who uses a transducer to image the heart. The transducer works like a loudspeaker and microphone because it can transmit sound and receive sound.
The transducer detects sound waves as they bounce off the internal structures. Different structures in the body reflect these sound waves differently and are used to make an image on a screen.
Cardiac sonographers assess the structure and function of a patient's heart using 2D or 3D imaging.
The images they obtain, called an echocardiogram, help physicians diagnose heart problems and develop appropriate treatment plans.
