Dawn Delvalle

Graduation Year: I graduated in May, 2015 with an Associate of Science. I am currently in my second semester of Nursing with an estimated graduation date in May, 2017.
Campus Attended/Attending: Toledo-area Campus
Major/Course of Study: Registered Nursing
Hometown: I lived in Cleveland, OH most of my life and relocated to Toledo, OH in 2003 (due to spouse in the Military).
High School: Valley Forge (Parma, OH). West Technical High School and East High (Cleveland, OH), however due to moving a lot and some issues, I didn't graduate until later in life (2005) from Penn Foster/Thompson High School. One should never give up on their dreams and goals no matter what age they are.
Why did you choose Owens? I felt that I would get a better education and more one on one time with staff.
What impacted your decision to attend Owens? I came to Owens and spoke with advisors and saw how they were willing to help me reach my goals, so I jumped on the opportunity.
How did Owens prepare you for your job? Being in the nursing program has taught me skills to help use evidence based practice in the medical field, and given me the tools I need to believe in myself and gain confidence in my abilities. The hands-on opportunities challenge me to be proficient in what I do (getting vital signs, doing head-toe assessments, administer medication and IVs, etc.) by using up-to-date technology and equipment.
Three words to describe Owens Community College? Committed, diverse, affordable.
Is there a special memory that you might have from your time here? My best memory would have to be graduating with my science degree. Graduation day was filled with many emotions for me, but, the feeling I got when walking down the long hallway (to the main room) and having it lined with Alumni and staff clapping and cheering the whole time, well, that gave me a sense of pride and accomplishment. I graduated Suma Cum Laude and it was the first time I had ever got to walk across the stage (and I am 43 years young). It's never too late to reach for the stars!

Three words to describe Owens Community College? Amazing, hands-on, beneficial.
My final statement for the audience about attending Owens, is that it doesn't matter what you want to do or how difficult it will be to get a job or find success in that field, going to Owens, helped me realize it will take work but this college will do everything in its power to get you there. Especially the teachers. My fondest memory is having taken the 'Making Music With Reason' course, and having Rex A. Maze as a professor and helping everyone with the hands on work, and how much he could see the passion I had for the art of music composing for film/games. To this day I will take what lessons he taught me and use them to my fullest ability. In the end, come to Owens, it will be worth every second of hard work.

Sheree Robinson

Sheree Robinson

Graduation Year: 2006
Campus Attended: Toledo-area Campus
Major/Course of Study: Physical Therapist Assistant
Residence: Maumee, OH
High School: Toledo Rogers
Current Job: PTA/Site Leader Promedica, Total Rehab at Center for Health Services
Why did you choose Owens? I was deciding between the PT program at another school and the PTA program at Owens. The pay is very good in PTA and the amount of schooling needed was perfect. I wanted to go on the fast track, so I chose Owens.
What impacted your decision to attend Owens? It was the camaraderie of the PTA class that I loved. We were 22 students who would be going through and facing the same challenges and we did that together. We came early or stayed late after classes. We formed study groups and took turns meeting at each other's houses so that everyone did not have to always find babysitters for those of us who had children.
How did Owens prepare you for your job? Honestly, the program is a "sink or swim" situation, but it is like that in the real world, so I get it now. The professors pushed that we understood the expectations of the program and if you couldn't work with all kinds of patients or think quickly on your feet, this program was not right for you. I am proud to be an Owens alumna because Owens cares about their students. The goal is not to just push people through any program. They hire professors to work closely with the students. I am very appreciative of the education I received at Owens.
In three words, describe Owens Community College? Life-changing, positive, structured.
