Syria in the News

For over a year, the Syrian government and people have been in a war with each other. What originally started as a protest against the torture of students, who posted anti-government graffiti, is now what the United Nations (UN) says is the start of a civil war. The UN estimates that 8,000 people have been killed and thousands more have been displaced. Despite requests from the US, Jordan, Turkey, and several other countries around the world, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has refused to bring the violence to an end. In February, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly to approve a resolution condemning President Assadís unbridled crackdown on the uprising, but China and Russia, Syriaís traditional patrons, have blocked all efforts.
