This major prepares graduates to serve with federal, state or local fire departments, ambulance service companies and other private and public first responder organizations.

Persons who have or acquire a felony conviction or a conviction regarding drugs, weapons, domestic violence or moral turpitude will find employment in the emergency medical management field extremely unlikely.

Employed as emergency medical technicians (EMTs) or paramedics, the quick reaction and competent care of these professionals make the difference in a variety of people's lives, including automobile accident victims, people who suffer heart attacks and women who give birth prematurely.

EMTs and paramedics also provide vital services as they care for and transport the sick or injured to hospitals or other medical facilities.

Emergency medical management training is progressive, consisting of EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and Paramedic. All 50 states require licensure, but levels and titles vary by state. In the next decade, an associate's degree will be required to work as an EMT or paramedic. Many employers require a criminal background check.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • Employment is projected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2018 and job prospects should be good, particularly in cities and private ambulance services.
  • Median hourly wages for EMTs and paramedics were $14.10 in May 2008, with the middle 50 percent earning between $11.13 and $18.28. About 27 percent of the EMTs and paramedics belonged to a union or were covered by a union contract.
  • Opportunities for jobs and job advancement will be best for those who have earned advanced certifications.
